Why You Might Want to Take a “Cannabis Tolerance Break”

Remember way back when a few hits got you *reallllyyy* high? Yeah. That was nice.

There are actually several reasons to take a cannabis tolerance break (aka t-break) but it might not even occur to you that you need hemp hiatus. After all, you can’t get addicted to weed- so why the need to ever take a break?

If you’re smoking every day, you might start to notice that you’re not getting the same buzz you used to, back when you were new to the game. As sad as it sounds, you may have developed what the kids in the biz call “cannabis tolerance.”

Don’t be alarmed though, a tolerance can be developed for anything if you take enough of it. Some people can’t even take basic painkillers due to a high tolerance.

What Is a Cannabis Tolerance Break?

A tolerance break is simply that: a short-term break from cannabis, to clear your head and body of cannabinoids, specifically the THC.

But, does it actually work??

Recent studies have indicated that people who partake in cannabis frequently do in fact build up a “tolerance.” The good news: while it is possible to become tolerant of cannabis and its effects, the buildup can be reversed by simply taking a break.

Here are a few reasons you may want to think about taking a cannabis tolerance break:

You Need to Pass a Drug Test

If you’re looking for a new job, or you’re are aware of an upcoming drug test at work, now would be the time to quit smoking! After all, as long as you have THC in your system, there’s no way to pass a drug test. (Not without taking desperate measures, anyway…)

And more importantly, don’t do unnecessary time for a harmless plant. Take a weed tolerance break, pass your drug test, and then get back to doing what you do best. Just remember; it’s temporary. Your future isn’t worth risking for a temporarily fun feeling.

You’re Getting Too High

Was there ever a time where you couldn’t even smell a joint without passing out for hours? Same here. Imagine being that person: every time you get high, you pass out on the couch, and now that room is closed for the foreseeable future.

If you’re getting way too high way too often, you should think about getting a less-potent strain- or admitting that your body just isn’t built for that kind of action. Talk to your local budtender to find the right strain for you, so that when you’re off your cannabis break you won’t get out-of-this-world high.

If you’ve decided to take a cannabis tolerance break, but you’re just sitting there like, “How? Do? I? Even? Do? That?” we got you. Below are a few tips on how to successfully execute this practice:

How to Successfully Take a Cannabis Tolerance Break

Acknowledge the Task at Hand

Truth is, anything you do every day will cause at least some sort of withdrawal if you suddenly quit, cold turkey.

That goes for coffee, ibuprofen, sugar, or even daily exercise. Your mind and body will literally crave it, and after a couple days, the “zero-THC” life may have you feeling like “Okay…what if I just smoked… a baby bowl?”

You won’t feel any physical pain, but you will absolutely start to think longingly about smoking. After about a week or two, the feeling will subside- but those first 14 days can be a bit tough.

Just be honest with yourself about the need to take a cannabis tolerance break. We are all capable of doing hard (but healthy!) things to improve our lives.

You got this.

Get Rid of Your Stash

Whether you smoke all your pot in one sitting prior to your break, or pass it out like Christmas gifts to your friends- just get rid of all of it.

You might plan on saving it for when your break is over- but don’t. Out of sight, out of mind, people.

If you keep a small stash, once you start craving a little puff, you’ll run to your stash and give in. It’s not worth it. If you are really serious about resetting your body and taking a cannabis tolerance break- really stick to it and get rid of any temptations that might be lurking around your place.

Tell Your Friends About Your Break

Make it a point to tell the friends you usually smoke with that you’re abstaining.

If they’re really your friends, they’ll support this hiatus and be cool hanging out with you, even if you’re not joining in on their smoke sesh.

After two weeks, it’s a lot easier to not smoke when alone, but kicking it with the gang is when your resolve will be tested.

You could even suggest a new group-hang-hobby, like mixing cocktails, mocktails or trying a new appetizer recipe together!

Here’s a cool list of trendy mocktails to blend up if you’re taking a cannabis tolerance break but you’d like something else to do with your hands.

Pick Up a New Hobby

Without smoking, you’ll probably have a little extra free-time on your hands. Some helpful (albeit unsolicited) advice: find something productive to do with it!

Write a poem. Learn Photoshop or another design program. Start running or rowing. Do something that your future self will thank you for.

If you’re about to embark on a cannabis tolerance break, here are a few ways to help stave off some of the withdrawal symptoms:

  • Try CBD or other THC-free cannabis products

  • Incorporate working-out or walking into your daily routing

  • Spend time with friends and family

  • Make sure to get 8-10 hours of sleep

  • Try an aromatherapy spray to help ease your mind, if you’re having trouble sleeping

  • Increase your intake of nutrient-dense foods

  • Drink more water, like- 8 glasses a day!

Cannabis tolerance breaks are generally a mild experience. Maintaining an active lifestyle and setting aside plenty of time to enjoy relaxing activities can definitely help make this process easier for you.

In the end, you’ll find that if you have the discipline to take a cannabis tolerance break, that discipline will apply to other parts of your life as well.

There’s going to be times where you’re tempted to quit your cannabis tolerance break, but make a promise to yourself that you just won’t smoke.

Good luck, friends- xo
