Women Who Consume Cannabis Are Smarter Than Those Who Don’t, According to Science

Unfortunately, we’re all guilty of projecting assumptions onto another person at some point in our lives. I think that’s just part of human nature.

However, there’s one stereotype that needs to be put to rest once and for all: the stupid, lazy stoner stereotype.

It’s hard to say where exactly this stereotype started, but years of D.A.R.E and scary PSA’s have promoted this biased and unfair assumption.

Now, science is here to set us all straight, and not a moment too soon.

According to Herb.co, the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health studied 800 women who regularly use cannabis, surveying them specific qualities like IQ, level of schooling completed, smoking / consuming habits and lifestyle factors. The results? Super interesting.

Not only did most of the female cannabis smokers have higher IQs than the general public, women who were 50% smarter than average were more likely to consume cannabis. Read: the smarter the woman, the greater her chances of using cannabis. Sweet.

There’s still the question left unanswered though, as to why this is the case.

While the data proved women who ingest cannabis are of higher intelligence, it didn’t really explain the reasoning behind this. Researchers were puzzled by the lack of findings, and questioned why the higher IQs were found in those who regularly used cannabis. The higher IQ phenomenon is still unexplained, but scientists have released some insight into why they think cannabis users are overall more intelligent.

The creators of the study believe that women’s inherent nature to be more open to new experiences could be at work here.

Often, those with higher IQs seek out new and exciting stimulation. Experimenting with cannabis, and experiencing the many benefits first-hand, might be the cause of the higher IQ phenomenon. Once the women try cannabis, they’re more likely to consume again because they begin to understand the mind-opening affects it delivers.

As cannabis regulations continue to lift, hopefully more research will be funded, and the many benefits of marijuana will become known.

Knowledge is key to acceptance, and we’re so thankful for all the hard work & effort that has been put into proving the power of this plant.

It is true that legalization means that cannabis is reaching out to new audiences, and that more Americans than ever are trying and using cannabis, freed from the legal (and let’s be honest, racial) issues that hovered over it in the past.

Smoking weed won’t necessarily make you smarter, but it’s possible that more women with higher IQs have found a use for cannabis in their lives.

  1. A study conducted by ScienceDaily proves what Rastas have know for years, and that is;  Marijuana  is the weed of wisdom. ScienceDaily reports that researchers followed about 8,000 women from ages 5 to 30. They tested their IQ twice during childhood — and at 16 and 30, they asked them if they’d used marijuana in the last year. Women who had high IQs at 5 were 50% more likely than other women to use marijuana at 30.
